A Tile-Based, Adaptable Boost Converter with Fast Transient Response and Small Voltage Ripples in 40 nm CMOS Technology

This work presents a fully integrated boost switched-capacitor regulator in 40 nm CMOS technology. In addition to using small MOS + MOM capacitors reduce the area, utilizes pseudo-6-bit analog-to-digital converter at converter’s output determine driving capability needed. Combined with 32-phase clock, this novel approach reduces control complexity, achieves ripples, and shows very fast transient response from zero maximum load of 6 mA, vice versa, 100 ps overshoot undershoot not exceeding 4% regulator’s voltage. A new Figure Merit is developed establish basis for comparing switched regulators’ response.
